There are many environmental problems to be solved. Much of the natural world is threatened by the domesticating effects of human intervention. Wildness is sacred and it is disappearing, taking with it irreproducible beauty and diversity. We treasure and serve the wild in our work, hoping to inspire others to do the same. A fundamental role of art has always been to attempt to manifest the sacred. This word is a noun. The spirituality of the infinite, of nature and wildness, has often devolved into organized religion, which in turn codifies and politicizes the sacred. In religion, the sacred becomes holy, an adjective often capitalized as though it were a noun. Religions, famous for producing demagogues, have killed a lot of artists. Why is this?
Resulting from our conviction that art and environment are connected, an online museum of environmental art launched in 2001, emerged from the Dairy. (Sam Bower, the founding executive director was also a founding Dairy member) This virtual museum is helping to change conventional perceptions of what art is and what art does. |
